Cardboard & Cowboys: The V-dub Crew’s Epic Sports Card Road Trip
The open road, a trunk overflowing with luggage, and a map stretching across the American South. This summer, the V-Dub family traded our sanity and our couch for an epic road trip. Our itinerary was simple yet dangerously ambitious: kick off in Tennessee, conquer Memphis, Dallas, Austin, and San Antonio, and then drive all the way back to Tennessee just in time to catch the Titans vs. Eagles NFL game.
While the trip was technically about making family memories, exploring museums, and eating our weight in regional food, the boys of the family had a top-secret secondary mission: the ultimate sports card safari.
Southern Hospitality & Cardboard Dreams
Our journey started in Tennessee, where the local card scene welcomed us with open arms (and heavily tempted our wallets). We made a point to drop in on our friends at NashCards, Shep's Cards and Collectibles, and C&J Cards. Look, if you ever find yourself passing through the state, these shops are absolute must-visits.
The customer service was top-notch, but the banter was even better. We spent hours swapping wild trading stories with the owners and local collectors. It turns out that speaking "fluent sports card" is the quickest way to make instant friends in a new town.
With our glove boxes already slightly heavier, it was off to the Great State of Texas.
The Great Texas Split: Boots vs. Boxes
The Lone Star State welcomed us with classic cowboy charm. We stayed on an old-fashioned ranch, spending our days lounging by the pool, admiring the horses, and consuming more steak than doctors would legally recommend.
But a few days in, a beautiful, unspoken agreement happened. The family split up. The ladies decided it was the perfect day for a clothing shopping marathon. Sensing our opportunity, the boys grabbed the keys to car number two, peeled out of the driveway, and hit the blacktop with a single goal: conquer eight different sports card stores in the Dallas area. Game on.
Our beautiful cardboard marathon took us through the doors of Triple Cards & Collectibles, Sappy's Cards, RJ Duke Sports Cards, and Waxxed Sports Cards. The absolute crown jewel of the tour, though? Checking out The Card Vault (shoutout to Tom Brady). Walking through those beautifully laid-out stores was like being a kid in a candy shop—if the candy was shiny, encased in plastic, and featured elite quarterbacks.
There is something hilariously nostalgic about hunting for that one elusive card that immediately brings back a vivid sports highlight from your childhood. And being able to drag your kids into the exact same obsession? Best parenting win ever.
The Real Heart of the Hobby (and Dollar Box Legends)
During our hours of browsing, we were reminded of a beautiful truth: this hobby isn't just about high-stakes price tags. A two-dollar card pulled from a dusty bargain bin can bring just as much pure, unadulterated joy as a pristine, mortgage-payment-sized PSA 10 graded slab.
In fact, the absolute highlight of my day didn't involve a rare pull or a shiny showcase item. It happened when I watched a grandmother walk into a shop with her two grandkids right after school. This wasn't her first rodeo—she was completely in the zone, helping them hunt for NFL cards and talking strategy with some serious league knowledge.
Each kid had a strict ten-dollar budget, but you would have thought they had a million-dollar line of credit by the sheer intensity on their faces as they flipped through the dollar boxes. Watching them argue over stats, I felt entirely at home.
More Than an Investment
This trip proved to us that the card community is so much more than just a stock market for sports nerds or a hunt for the next big financial payout. It’s an avenue for bonding, a bridge between generations, and a great excuse to road-trip across state lines. We felt that exact same magic when we attended the Dallas Card Show later in the trip, meeting crowds of incredible people who treated us like old friends.
Yes, we bought some incredibly cool cards. Yes, we lost our voices at the football game. And yes, car number two will probably smell like fast food forever. But looking back, the best thing we brought home wasn't made of cardboard—it was the memories we built together.
The V-Dub boys are back home and resting our feet, but we are already plotting the next route. Until next time, hide your wallets and keep hunting!
